Want to know more?  Read on... we love sharing our coastal living experiences through our hand-sketched wallpaper!

Introduction

Walls, just like many aspects of our coastal decor should tell a story—one that feels as natural as sea grass in the wind and as effortless as a walk along the shore. Our wallpapers are authentically coastal, hand-drawn, and inspired by the everyday beauty that washes ashore. Designed from our 1700s Sea Captain’s house on Cape Cod, each pattern captures the simple charm and timeless character of coastal living—because sometimes the best design is the one that feels easy, honest, and true to place. Inspired by the simple Coastal Memories - a beach walk, an afternoon sail and all the truly Coastal Colors - wooden oars, dock and honey brown boat deck. The neutral sandy and driftwood flax tones offer total Coastal Calm.

1. Hand-sketched Beach Wash Ashores:

Whole Collection: Seaweed, Oysters, Horseshoe Crabs, Mermaid's Purse, Fiddler Crab, Wavy + Painterly Stripes - Oh My!

Wallpaper choices are endless, but instead of following the crowd, why not go authentically coastal? Real coastal living is about collecting seashells, beach grass, and memories—so stay true to your surroundings and bring the beach home, minus the sand. All of our patterns are inspired by what we find at the beach and then hand-draw with pencil or painted in gouache, followed by color selection and print ready prep. A very hands on approach and truly artisan quality.

When selecting one of our wallpapers consider:

  • Room usage and function along with sight lines from adjoining rooms
  • Colors for timeless appeal and easy mixing with other pieces
  • Everyone has a favorite beach wash ashore - what's yours?

"The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination, and brings eternal joy to the soul."

2. Some rooms take the lead and others play supporting roles:

Beach houses are not always that well thought out as they have been a work in progress over the generations.

With decades of experience staging and decorating beach homes, and now exclusively designing coastal-inspired wallpaper and fabric, I’ve seen firsthand that the most impactful interior design transformations are often the simplest. Straightforward, thoughtfully executed choices—like hand-drawn, purely coastal patterns—bring authenticity and lasting charm to a space without overcomplication. Often the unexpected brings the magic.

Think about putting the entrance, hallway, powder room or bathrooms, laundry room and bedrooms center stage.

  • Room usage and function — plan ahead for consistency and flexibility
  • Sight lines with adjoining rooms — seamless flow - every room leads to the next
  • Fix fixes — wallpaper can help hide flaws and add a feature

3. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced wallpaper:

Producing wallpaper that is eco-conscious from field to finished product is central to all we do at Laughing Gull Hill.

Living on the coast may have influenced our desire to produce eco-conscience and green products. Having clean beaches and water have pushed those on the Laughing Gull Hill team to carry this into all that we do. The paper base on which we print our residential products is a PVC-free paper sourced right here in the United States. The wood pulp used in the paper consists of 10% post-consumer waste, with the remaining pulp coming from FSC-certified forestry practices. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an organization that promotes sustainable forestry practices worldwide. Ink is the next major component of our production process. Latex ink is used for several reasons: Latex is water-based, produces a durable finish, contains no harmful chemicals, and is odorless. Kid and pet friendly!

  • Dealing with humidity — non-woven premium matte wallpaper breaths
  • Durable and Timeless — matte finish is great for high traffic areas
  • Easy Installation — non-woven paper doesn’t expand or shrink when wet, seams stay tight and patterns match up perfectly

So Why Wallpaper for Coastal Living?

Because it’s the easiest way to bring the feeling of the shore indoors without the sand. Wallpaper adds personality, texture, and story to a space — it’s what turns a plain wall into a coastal moment. Whether it’s a hand-sketched shell, a beach wave design, or the soft tones of sandy driftwood, the right pattern can instantly create that relaxed, breezy feeling we crave from life by the water. It frames your furniture, highlights entryways, and makes every corner feel intentional. Wallpaper doesn’t just cover walls — it sets the tone for how you live and move through a room. Each design, inspired by real coastal landscapes, brings authenticity and a sense of place to your home. From the subtle sandy neutrals of our Oyster wallpaper to bolder hand-drawn patterns, every choice reflects the textures, colors, and rhythms of the shore. It’s a simple way to tell your coastal story, whether in a city apartment, a Cape Cod cottage, or anywhere you want a touch of the sea. Coastal living isn’t just about where you are — it’s about how you feel in your space, every single day.

Frequently Asked Questions...

1. How Much Wallpaper Will I Need?

Start by measuring the height and width of each wall, then use a wallpaper calculator (like the one on omnicalculator.com (https://www.omnicalculator.com/construction/wallpaper) to get the total. Always order an extra roll or two to account for pattern matching and touch-ups — especially if your walls have doors, windows, or corners. It’s always better to have a little extra than fall short mid-install!

Feel free to have the Laughing Gull Hill Sales Team help with this calculation. Simply email Eva and Anna @ hello@laughinggullhill.com for help.

2. Is your wallpaper easy to install?

Yes — our wallpapers are non-woven, which means they’re strong, breathable, and easy to hang (and remove). Pasting the wallpaper is straight forward, making installation clean and simple. Perfect for designers and DIYers alike. LGH wallpapers are an Installer FAV!

3. How durable is coastal wallpaper, and how do I maintain it?

Our wallpapers are made from high-quality, non-woven materials, which makes them strong, tear-resistant, and long-lasting. They’re also easy to clean — a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap is usually all you need to remove dust or light stains. This durability makes them ideal for high-traffic areas like entryways, kitchens, or hallways, so your coastal walls can look fresh and inviting for years without constant upkeep.
